Message If the car is running lean because you have an air leak, it is running with more advanced timing than it would without the leak. More advanced timing plus a lean mixture is very likely to detonate and the ECU will pick this up and start pulling timing. When you retarded the timing at the CAS, you may have pulled it enough that it didn't detonate so the ECU wasn't pulling as much timing, which would explain the increase in power by retarding timing.

Octavian-z's explanation about how timing affects power and torque is a far cry from reality, so take that info with a grain of salt.
